“Ιf you wish to admire the beauties of the world come to Zoniana to see the hole of Sfentonis”
The cave of Zoniana in Mylopotamos – Rethymno, known as “the hole of Sfentonis”, is located at the entrance of the village Zoniana, at the position “Myronos” and over the position “Skafidia”, a spring with clear water that once supplied the historical settlement Axos. The Sfentoni cave is one of the most important environmental tourist destinations in Crete and Greece and the visitor can see 7 of the 14 rooms of the cave, thanks to the corridor and the special lighting that has been installed.
It is a quite large cave with direction from North to South, a maximum length (in straight line) of 145 m. and an area of about 3.500 square meters, with many chambers (The Harmonies, the Sanctum of the Fairy, the Chapel, the Palace, the Parthenon, the Panorama, the Metropolis, the Lost Child, the Fossilized Waves) that succeed each other. It has rich a decoration of stalagmites and stalactites and toward its end there are several fossilized waves (lithomatic basins).
Inside the cave you can admire many stalactite and stalagmite complexes. You can hear the distinctive sound of the water drops that create their own art and sculpture in the dark, resulting in the creation of the cave’s interior and the opening of the cave through the “body” of Mount Psiloritis.
You can stand still for a while, without breathing, and come to terms with yourself and the insignificance of your existence compared to the eternity of the nearby stalagmite. You will feel what the French say:
“The cave is the kingdom of silence and solitude where the human is not afraid to be alone, to be by oneself”
