Μuseum of Contemporary Art
It is found in the heart of old historical city, under the Venetian Castle and the Archaeological Museum.
The Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete from 2009 constitutes a modern exhibition space of high specifications roughly 1000 sq.m. who afterwards the works of his extension and complete restoration supplemented the old Municipal Art gallery “L. Kanakakis” (1992) and the Centre of Contemporary Art (1995).
Its permanent collection includes roughly 550 works of Lefteris Kanakakis (oil paintings, drafts and aquarelles) thus representing all the stages of his achievements and works of contemporary Greek artists, thus covering a wide spectrum of Modern Greek art as it has been accomplished from 1950 until today. The collection in its entirety covers sufficiently the samples of art of our second half century, from the abstraction to the creation of work processed in the computer.
The Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete in its central space (st. Himaras 5) presents part from the work of its Permanent Collection while in some of its art spaces or in alternative spaces where it uses; it entertains periodical exhibitions of Pan-Hellenic and international content. At the same time it realises lectures, training programs and collaborations with institutions corresponding in Greece and in the abroad.
From 1992 until today, have been organised 88 exhibitions, monographic and thematic and have been published 60 editions. All events are accompanied with tours at ages of children and adults. Within the framework of Educational Sector of C.C.A., since 1996, have been operating Workroom of Fine Arts (8 Himaras Str.) that are intended for children and adults.
